MADE Symposium in Berlin

I went to the MADE symposium in Berlin last week and it was amazing! The symposium was put together by Marko Djurdjevic, one of the most talented digital artists out there, and consisted of four days of workshops, presentations, portfolio reviews and parties! I’ve met the most amazing talented people from all over the world, had personal talks with Jason Chan, Wes Burt and Nox about my portfolio, while listening to inspiring workshops and presentations by Marko Djurdjevic, Android Jones, Coro, Whit Brachna and many more. It was absolutely fantastic to be there!

Andromeda

New illustration of Andromeda! Andromeda was a Greek princess who was punished by the gods for her mother’s arrogance. She was tied up to a rock in the sea to be eaten by a seamonster! Luckily the brave hero Perseus came to her rescue and married her. They lived happily ever after There’s a “making of” in the sketch section!

TeamCHoW: Studentparty tarot cards!

Together with talented artists Elsa Kroese, David Smit and Ward Lindhout I formed a team to participate in the TeamCHoW, a drawing competition at conceptart.org. The assignment was to design tarot cards, and we decided to take a whole different settings for these cards: a studentparty! My drawings are those of the hanged man and the 7 of swords. It was so much fun drawing these characters, and I’m proud of the endresult :p (view and vote for our cards here!!)

Happy 2010! Vermeer meets Vanillaware!

Happy newyear! Our artbook “Toekomst” sold really well at Comiket 77 in Tokyo in december, meaning our Japanese friends have sent us a package full of very cool Japanese artbooks as well as ten pieces of the Toekomst artbook. Yay!!

In the meantime I received a beautiful Christmas card from Vanillaware, a Japanese game company famous with Odin Sphere and Muramasa. Vanillaware has been a huge inspiration for me, which you can especially see in the similar artstyle of my project Hollandia. George Kamitani of Vanillaware has actually drawn the main character of Hollandia for us which was a huge honour!! So finally we made a drawing for Vanillaware in return Together with Ward Lindhout I drew this picture of the girl with the pearl earring and Momohime (main character of Muramasa).

Drawing Nightmare @ the Comiket in Tokyo!

I have studied Comic Art in Japan and during that time I met a group of Japanese students who were really into concept art. Together we made an artbook that will be sold at the Comiket in Tokyo this december. Comiket is the biggest manga/art/doujinshi fair in Japan and is held every year. It’s very hard to get a spot there to sell your stuff! I’m very excited and wished I could be there! This is the book:

The title “Toekomst” means Future in Dutch, and I’m flattered they wanted to give the book a Dutch title The second drawing is mine, and the bottom one is from Ward. The other artists have Japanese websites:

Winner Dutch Game Award!

15-11-2009

Yes!! Hollandia has won a Dutch Game Award (= like the Dutch Oscars for games)!! We were nominated in the category for best student game and won! A full report on the evening can be found here. The originality of the concept and professional development were one of the main reasons we received the award. We will now develop Hollandia further and try to get the game published in 2010!

This weekend I also travelled to Groningen to give a presentation in the comic-museum about my manga-studies in Japan. I had a great time there! The museum is very interesting and shows all Dutch comics, including the sketches and paintings. I’d never been there before but it is really worth a visit!!

Speaker @ Game in the City

My graduation project Hollandia is nominated for a Dutch Game Award! Also, I will give a presentation during this game festival in Amersfoort about Dutch Game Design. It will all happen on Novembre 12th. I’m really excited!

Last weekend I was also at the GameXperience in Hilversum to present and promote Hollandia, and give drawing workshops to young children. It was a lot of fun!

In the meantime I made some new drawings you can find in the Art section or just click below. And I’ve been playing Uncharted 2 which is now my favourite game
